Fairtrade Picnics : A Great Success

Posted on 12th Jul 2007

Wales Fairtrade development officer  Mark Richardson said, "The Big Fairtrade picnic took place in more than 60 locations across Wales.  The world record for a Fairtrade picnic was set in Tenerife in 1999, when 8000 people took part .  We are checking now to find out whether the Wales events have broken the record. "  It looks like as many as 10,000 people too part in the event.Donations from Morrsions for Llangynfelyn's Picnic

The N. Ceredigion Fairtrade Schools Project made a big contribution with the participation of  Comins Coch School, Ysgol Craig yr Wylfa , Ysgol Llangynfelyn, Ysgol Llanilar, Penglais School ,Ysgol Rhydypennau and Ysgol Talybont .  All the schools held their picnics throughout the day on the 29th of June ; some were in the sunshine and some were forced indoors due to rain showers.

Ysgol Langynfelyn  invited Taliesin Playgroup to join them and had about 60 children at their  picnic.  Rhian Nelmes, the Fairtrade Schools link teacher, went to Morrisons after school to buy the food: bananas, juice, geo bars and chocolate to make rice krispie cakes and talked to the manager about what they were doing. He gave them all the food for free!

Emlyn  Jones from Ysgol Craig yr Wylfa said ' We had a great picnic out on the grass. The amount of stuff brought in was amazing....the children have Ysgol Rhydypennaureally been out and about shopping!!!! The weather was great. "

Pupils from Ysgol Rhydypennau enjoyed the two hours of glorious weather as they picnicked on Fairtrade goodies brought in from home.  Helen Jones felt the great success of the picnic was making pupils and parents  more aware of the range of Fairtrade products available when the went shopping for Fairtrade snacks to bring to the picnic.

Penglais SchoolPenglais School held their "picnic" inside due to the unpredictable weather. About 40 pupils sampled healthy Fair Trade fruit, juices and cereal bars as well as chocolate and cake. They gave out information about Fair Trade and held a quiz on  Fairtrade .

Aberystwyth Fairtrade Group organised the Fairtrade picnic held at Ysgol Llanilar.  Mrs Jen Horgan brought them Ysgol Llaniarbananas and orange juice. The weather wasn't good enough for them to go outside to have the picnic, but co-ordinator Lowri  Roberts said,  "  It was just as tasty inside in the classroom!"

Ysgol Talybont  enjoyed a Fairtrade picnic where a great deal of chocolate (and fruit!) was consumed and an afternoon of fun activities. They played 'pass the fairtrade orange' and 'how far can you throw a fairtrade pineapple?'. Comins Coch pupils enjoyed a range of healthy snacks during their picnic.

There were many excellent logos and the voting was close but unfortunately there could only be one winner! Second place goes to Ysgol Llanilar and third place to Ysgol Rhydypennau. Well done to all the pupils who represented their school in the competition.

Optional Visit to Student Council this Term

I have visited a number of schools already and have arranged to see others in regards to the Healthy Snacks and the Coffee and Teas Tasting. If you want me to visit your student council, please get in touch! Of course I’m happy to drop the coffees and teas at your school for you to organise the tasting.

Blind Coffee and Tea Tasting

Posted on 11th Jun 2007

A range of teas and coffees are available from me to all participating schools to take part in a blind tea and coffee tasting for the staff to encourage them to switch to Fairtrade coffees and teas at school.

The school councils will be responsible for developing a scoring and comment sheet so teachers can rank their coffee and tea preferences and comment on if they’d be willing to switch to the particular tea or coffee they’ve tasted.

(If you feel you’ve developed a good scoring and comment sheet please e-mail it to me to put on the website to share with the other schools.)

After your school finishes the tasting ,I will reveal the brands and the prices of all of them to you. Please e-mail me when you are ready for those details!
