Fair trade Assembly
In June, Mrs Griffiths and year 5 and 6 pupils held a ‘Fair Trade’ assembly to explain the benefits of becoming a ‘Fair trade School’. The whole school attended the assembly.
Robert and Kirsten took it in turn to describe the differences between farming fair trade bananas and farming non fair trade bananas. We learned that non fair trade farmers got less money for doing the same work and their working conditions were appalling.
Mrs Griffiths then asked for two volunteers from the audience to face a taste test. Chloe and Liam were chosen to taste the difference between fair trade and non fair trade bananas.
Both were blindfolded and asked to choose the best tasting banana, either A or B. Both Chloe and Liam decided that ‘A’ tasted better. Mrs Griffiths then announced that ‘A’ was in fact a fair trade banana.
Mrs Griffiths explained to the pupils how fair trade works. She told us that if we buy fair trade products then the farmers and producers would get more money for their produce.
At the end of the assembly there was a quiz, it was a fantastic assembly
